In Norway, all vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg must have a toll payment tag if they are registered to an enterprise.

This also applies to such vehicles registered to a government enterprise, county administration or municipality.

If you have a motorhome, SUV or similar with a maximum authorised mass of more than 3,500 kg that you use privately, the vehicle is not subject to this requirement.

The legal basis for the mandatory requirement can be found in Sections 13, 31 and 31a of the Road Traffic Act, and in the Regulations relating to the mandatory use of electronic payment unit in motor vehicles above 3,500 kg.

The police, Norwegian Customs and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration are inspection authorities and will carry out roadside inspections of toll tags.

What will be inspected?

  • A valid type of tag should be placed inside the windscreen in accordance with instructions
  • The vehicle needs to have a valid toll tag for heavy vehicles.
  • The vehicle needs to have a valid tag with a tag number that is registered to the same vehicle’s number plate/registration number.

How is this verified?

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration will target heavy vehicles and commercial vehicles and inspect these with regard to the use of mandatory electronic tags. Inspections may take place as random checks, or as part of regular roadside vehicle inspections for other purposes.
